Hickory or not

>I bought some hickory last Fall more or less on a whim and now I've squared it up to turn some stool legs. However, it seems to shred in some places after going through the planer. Is this going to be a problem in the lathe. I can use it for square legs so not all is lost. I've never used it before. TIA

>Hi Ron - I love the look of hickory. After working in a cabinet shop, and making several kitchens and offices of hickory, I gotta say it is not my favorite wood to work! It is some of the "stringiest" and most prone to splintering wood there is, as far as common cabinet woods.
It may be a pain to turn but SHARP tools and proper technique should help.

>I agree with Brian. I was given a ton of Hickory already bone dry with bugs. She had already had it debugged fortunately. I have used it off and on for years for little projects and really like the look. I must have sharp tools because I don't remember having problems with it tearing much. It didn't hand plane very well but I don't do much of that.
Turning has always gone well but I do keep my tools sharp.

>Have a look at these hickory window handles. I love the way it turns. It's great strength is very nice for furniture pieces. Turnings don't have to be massive to be solid with such a stout wood.
