Andy Halterman: Bring on the white stuff
>I came upon this lovely silver maple tree that selflessly gave it's life in the name of progress. I saw it as my sovereign duty to make sure it's legacy lived on in the form of heat (for the smaller bits) and as some form of wooden art (liberal use of that word).
The bowl is about 7 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/8 tall. I was just looking for a basic shape to see what this stuff looked like when turned. Wall thickness is about 3/16 up top and about 5/16 toward the bottom. I utilized the Dave Smith 100 grit gouge method for cleaning up some endgrain tear but it was minor to begin with. I remember someone on the Pond talking about turning green maple and this stuff was a joy to spin. Cut like a dream even with my lousy sharpening technique. I think the hole in the side adds some character. It made sanding somewhat exciting. Sanded to 320 and then some wax.
