Shop Built texturing tool?

>Hey folks,
I stopped by Woodworker's Haven today with the intent of purchasing a Sorby Spiraling / Texturing Tool. I've been meaning to get one for some time now and decided today was the day I picked it up. Of course when I got there, they were out of stock.
Who knows, maybe this was a sign that I should ask this question before I go and plop down approximately $155.00 for this tool.
I seem to remember reading about a woodturner who made his own version of this. I'd like to see if this is worth pursuing, or if I'm better off just buying the Sorby. Anybody else remember this?
I mean, it can't be all that hard to make. It's a handle, a metal rod, and a toothed wheel which is attached via a bearing. It's just that I have no idea where to get the wheels, or the bearings that work with them. :>)
See ya around,
Dominic
