>Knurling wheels. They usually come in pairs to produce a cross-hatched set of lines. You can get a pair of wheels in a holder for $7. at Micro-Mark. For use with a wood lathe you add your own handle.

These wheels don't cut, they produce indentations, so the piece needs support. If texturing bowls it might be easier to texture before hollowing.

>I`d look at these type of places for small sprockets with ball bearings,they`re most often used as idlers or to tension long lengths of drive chain.With alittle handwork(aided by a grinder or Dremel)you can reconfigure the teeth to do pretty much what you want.Most sprockets are hard steel so grinding is the ticket,followed by a diamond hone for sharpening the face(side)is you`re reconfigured it for a cutting tool such as a spiraling tool.

You could also do a Google search to see what type of sprockets are available before going down to the local shop and pawing thru thier inventory.Might help to narrow the search if you had an idea before you stand on that long line at the parts counter,DAMHIKT.;^)

I made one using a 1/2" bar with two tabs welded on the end of it. That sort of made a "U" shape on the end of the bar. I then drilled a hole through the tabs and put a bolt through it with a locking nut on one end. I bought the texturing wheel through Klingspore's Woodworking Shop. The stock number for the Sorby Texturing Cutter is SZ00027 and the cost is $26.95. This wheel already has the bearings in it and is ready to go. I would order the wheel before I welded the tabs to the bar, just to make sure you get a good fit. It is better to call them at 1-800-228-000 to talk to someone to order. Their website is www.woodworkingshop.com. I have been very pleased with my texturing tool. I have no affiliation with Klingspore, other than being a customer.

P.S. They also have great prices on bulk sandpaper.

I saw those wheels when I was out shopping. But not at that price! That is really a good deal. I saw one at the store for close to $70.00! It's a piece of cake for me to make a tool handle that will hold those. Thanks for posting this information.
