Wooden Buttons

>I'm planning to try turning some pretty wooden buttons out of exotic and figured woods... Anyone have experience with this ? I'm wondering if these would sell at craft shows and spinning/knitting gatherings -- I think they would. I'm planning on working out some production techniques, so let me know if you have any advice.

I have been turning wood for about 12 years now. I consume about 20 hours a week in front of the lathe making primarly bowls and platters. I keep thinking about making other "stuff" on the lathe, and ocasionaly I even get beyond the thinking part. But I take the most pleasure in bowls and platters. I have most every tool availble for the lathe but I am always looking for a new tool. More than looking for a new tool I am looking for a new hunk of wood. While a corner woodworker (sometimes called flat woodworker) can never have enough clamps, I find most woodturners can never have enough turning stock. The woodturning club I belong to has a Christmas party each year and part of that party is a "grab bag". We bring in a turning, that is judged by the people who come to the party. The people who make the top three turnings get prizes (like sandpaper or a tool). The real prize though is the exchange of turnings that comes from this colection of turnings. Some of my most cherished turned objects are the ones I have recieved from these grab bags.

>Brad, I made some buttons from legally removed mangrove limbs. The wood is beautiful, hard and a conversation starter. They were for my daughter's overcoat and several of her friends wanted them. It seems that larger buttons were popular and would have been good sellers. Stay warm up there in N.E. Arch

We're having a gen-u-ine heat spell up he-a; why it may go above freezing two days in a row !!!

Hell, in January it was below zero almost every night, and never went above zero for at least 5 days in a row, so turning out in the garage was definately impaired. We never went below -24 (F), but about 45 miles north of here it went to -40. When you add the wind chill to that (well, subtract, I suppose) that's a bit snappy !
