What finish do you guys use on bottle stoppers?

>I started out using friction polish, but found it water spotted badly, I then changed to spray lacquer, but it's kind of a pain to spray those little things. What are soem other options for a quick drying, durable finish.

>Most of my bottle stoppers are out of fairly oily exotics (african blackwood, bocote, ziricote, tulipwood, kingwood, etc.) I sand to 2000, use the abrasive wax from U-beaut (I forget the name now), and then apply a thin layer of carnuba wax by rubbing a small piece of it on the work turning fast on the lathe. Polish with a soft cloth and I'm done. If you have sanded carefully, the wood glows.

>I use a spray on poly finish. I have a board drilled with holes for the dowels and wide holes for the stoppers (upside down). Works great for me.

>I sand to 400 and use Mylands sanding sealer followed by 0000 steel wool. Then I use Mylands melamine finish. After a few quick coats I then either buff out with carnauba wax for a gloss finish or Mylands Wax [carnauba & beeswax] paste.

I use Deft high gloss, cut 50/50 with lacquer thinner, while still on the lathe. Buff with a soft cloth until dry. Before putting them out for sale (or giving them out as gifts) I buff with tripoli and white diamond. I don't use the wax as I find this is too soft and will dull quickly after being handled. On highly figured domestic woods I might use tung oil first and then come back in a few days to do the usual treatment described above.

>For a large run, I hold by the dowel and dip them into a dedicated can of gloss deft, drain them on 'wayne's board' and repeat. When dry I buff with the Beall series. BTW,free mahogany scrap from cabinet shops dipped or left in iron/vinegar ebonizer really does look like ebony. Arch
