>Mark I'll carefully wade in here to say that I also use car finishes(Meguires) on my work ,when I purchased them the gentleman at the counter asked what type of "classic car" I was restoring- I figured if this stuff was good enough for the pros to use restoring classic cars then surely it was good enough for my turning needs.. After applying laquer I use Meguires #2 and #7 in that order then off to the Beal Buffing wheels I use the white diamond( I skip the tripoli as I feel it is to coarse at this stage) then caranuba wax to complete the finish.I must say the response to my finishes since I started using the Meguires products have been absolutely positive for my "artisctic stuff" .I would not recommend it for a salad bowl!

Dont know if this helps but I figure the only way you will really know is try it and see for yourself, you might be suprised!

Why not go to the local Home Depot and buy a can of the Minwax Finishing Wax. It isn't Renaissance, but it is a good quality wax that will never cause a problem. You might even discover that you like it.

I got Bill Baumbeck to send me a sample with some pens last fall and I couldn't see any advantage over other waxes. Seems like I recall a previous thread where someone said that Johnsons is also a microcrystaline wax.

I recently French polished a Gentleman's bathroom and instead of beeswax or carnuba wax, which we considered might be too susceptible to heat and moisture, we used "Turtle wax" (Brand name,, no turtles died in this operation :)

I'm not at all sure what the confusion is about contamination? These waxes are polymerized products, they might contain some silica, but not silicon. There are some car care products that do contain silicon, but they are liquid preparations for dashboards and the like. I don't think that is what you are talking about.

If you are still in doubt, post the product name and the list of contents from the label (if available) and I will try to be more specific.

The only problem I've had with Car wax's is that they dry white until buffed. If you have any defects or pores that aren't filled in they fill these and you can't get the color out without using mineral spirits which removes the wax and you have to start all over.

I use Johnsons floor wax. It's inexpensive, hard and has a good feel.
