Just starting out

>Hello everyone,

In the past few months, I have developed an interest in wood turning. I have a virtually unlimited supply of wood, and all I need now is some advice on where to begin. I haven't got a lathe or any tools yet, and I have no clue as to what I need to begin. I am primarily interested in making turkey calls and duck calls. What size lathe would I need to do this? What tools would I need to start? Are there any good books out there that teach the basics? All I have now is a lot of dried cherry, walnut, red oak, yellow poplar, sycamore, persimmon and the willingness to learn all I can about this fascinating hobby.

>Welcome to woodturning. FYI, I have yet to meet a woodturner who started out with small turnings in mind that didn't progress on to larger turnings such as bowls, hollow vessels ect... Just a thought befor you purchase a lathe. best of luck, Sean

>Hello, What you think you will turn and what you end up turning can be very different as times go on :). Either way maybe a small lathe such as a Jet/Delta/Mercury would be good for your first one. They aren't very expensive and will turn the size of stuff you are planning on. As time goes on and you decide you want to go bigger it is pretty easy to sell a little lathe or better yet keep it, it won't take up much room. Either way have fun!!

Oh then about week later I "needed" some new Sorby tools, a new accessory for my One-Way Jig to help sharpen tools. Then About two weeks later I decided pens would be fun so I went back and bought all the goodies to make pens, kits, pen vise, glues, drill bits, etc. It is ugly.

Good luck. It is habit forming. Have fun.
