When I make a jam chuck it is only tapered about 1 or 2 degrees. Just enought to make it fit. If your lid is still loose try putting some shim material on the chuck. I use either tissue paper or paper towels. Every now and then I have to use 16 oz leather. We all have our bad days.

One day I was complaining about a jam chuck and friend who is an instrument repairman said to wrap in in thread and soak the thread in glue. This is how they fix some Clarinets. It worked great.

1) Make sure your lid bottoms out on something (typically the rim of the lid flush against a ledge of the jam chuck).

2) Usually, my jam chucks are too tight so that I have a hard time removing the lid. Often, a couple of knocks against the jam chuck sets up enough vibration to loosen the lid. If not, drill a hole through the chuck and use a tommy bar to gently knock it off

3) If the jam chuck is slightly too loose, add a little bit of moisture to the joint and it will tighten right up. In my turning club, we call that "tounge oil" (pun intended).

You have to say that three times slowly while turning in a anti-clockwise circle starting by facing Stockholm and finish by facing Raku having made three complete revolution, one while looking up to the heavens, one while looking down to mother earth and the third with your eyes closed looking inward.

This all assumes that the detail gouge you have in your hand was blessed.

The typical blessing is done by holding the tool in the horizontal position while rotating the tool with one hand clockwise and sprinkling an exotic wood sanding dust on the steel while chanting:

"Spirt of the turner bless this tool with the steady sure hands of the master."

It helps if you think of a particular woodturner as "the Master".

Naturally this ceremony should be done in the dark of a full moon while facing your lathe.

Are the shoulders of your lid perfectly parallel? If not, the lid will pop off the jam chuck. Try using a softer wood for the jam chuck; I like mahogany or straight grained, old growth fir. The softer wood gives a little. I don't taper my jam chucks I just make the lid fit a little tighter. You might also try melting some bees wax on the jam chuck spigot and push the lid on quick before it dries.
