I had a Great Weekend!

Joe in a Cleveland suburb

>Hi folks.

Just wanted to share with you my experience this past weekend. I'll try hard not to be too wordy. Hey, that's hard for me!

I've always been over on the flat side, even back to BP days. Never had a lot of interest in turning. I have some projects down the road I want to do that'll require some spidle work. I bought a Jet mini based on some posts here. Started asking questions and posted last week about my son showing interest in it (he has zero interest in ww'ing btw). Jim Pugh noticed I'm from the Cleveland area and he is not too far west.

Jim wrote to me and offered to spend time with my son and I. Wow! What a great opportunity and what a great time we had. Jim gave his entire Saturday afternoon to us. What was going to be a couple hours took the entire afternoon.

Jim showed us around his shop and house. We got to see the types of things we could do with this lathe. Looks to me that turning can be very addictive and quite an art. Jim has some really nice looking pieces.

Jim spent a lot of time with us on safety, sharpening tools, stock preperation, what's needed and what's not, as well as letting us take one of his apple logs and turn it into a bunch of little chips.

I am so grateful to Jim for giving his day to Jacob and I. We learned so much and it was only the tip of the iceburg I'm sure. The kicker is Jim mentioned this is session one. Can't wait for session two...

I took my camera to try and get a Sightings pic but forgot I had it. Darn. Maybe next time.

Great guy, neat shop, neat lathes.

Thank you very much Jim.

>Glad he took the time to get you and your boy into it. It's a very addictive hobby which, I'm sure, all of us here hope he continues to grow into. Pretty soon your boy will bew posting here like an old hand. Have fun and turn safe.

FANTASTIC!

>I am really glad you were able to find someone to help you get started correctly; it always scares me when people buy a lathe and go at it without the basic do's and don'ts. I have had a number of students who have tried to learn on their own and arrive here for a lesson and they are scared to death of the lathe because of serious mishaps early on. A good start for you and your son will make this a good hobby and a safe one. Pats on the back for the WCer who took you in.

>Rockler over on Brookpark. The turners club meets there. I believe it is this Saturday and they are having a special guest. I will be out of town and can't go. You might want to check it out.
