Spent the weekend in Yorktown and Williamsburg VA visiting in laws - its a woodturner's DREAM down there since Isabel dropped by. I saw thousands of big big trees down in yards, side of the roads, everywhere. Up here they're cleaned up as soon as they fall down but folks there buck'm and leave them on the ground or just leave them whole. I was absolutely floored by the amount of timber on the ground. Hickory, maples, lots of maples, ash, beech...everywhere. Could have literally collected a year's worth of lumber in one morning just by driving down the streets. The Colonial Parkway was jaw dropping.

I of course, had a Suburban full of golden retrievers instead of chainsaws.

Anyone here live in that area? You must be in heaven. In a month or two I'd like to rent a big truck and drive down for a weekend. Could use some help when that time comes.

ISince the storm I have used 15 gal on gas and 2 gal of bar oil just cleaning up around my house. That's not heaven

As far as the Parkway I don't suggest going out there cutting trees. Even the ones down pn the ground. Big Brother really don't like that. I tried to get some maple burls last summer frim the National Park and they burned them instead of giving them to me. Said NO when asked.

>Dick, I didn't mean to minimize your plight, but holy canoli, I drooled all weekend long at the horizontal lumber in Yorktown. Just in my in-laws neighborhood alone I could have been happy for a year. I'm down there every few months. Will contact you next time!

That sounds like the Gov. It seems like us dumb folks jaut have to learn just how important they are and how the total waste of that wood is better than using it.

You might sonsider entering in to a contract to do a clean up for them. I am sure that they would rather pay to get it cleaned up than give it away.

>I won't live long enough to see all the trees cleaned up. Just on my lot (5 acers) I bet I have 200- 300 trees down. If you consider that and add the trees on the National Park Way between Jamestown and Yorktown about 20 miles or so It's more than anyone can handle.

I know why they will not let me have the maple burls. If they let me have some then they will have to let everyone have some. It's easier to police one person than 100's.

I have about all the wood I can turn anyway. I have a shead that's 16x8 that is full and a friend on mine called to tell he has some large cedar.
