Bore before or after

>I'm making some stools. I'm thinking that if I bore the holes in the legs for the rungs when the stock is still square, ie. right out of the planer getting the holes at right angles to one another should be a piece of cake. However, would I have a lot of chipping out as the gouge passed over the holes when I turn them? I'm using hardwoods: birch, maple, oak, etc. I know I can make a jig to use for boring after turning, I'd just like to remove another step if possible. Thanks in advance for any opinions.
