>It occurred to me that many readers will be unable to get the results that have been been described for Deft as a wood finish in a recent thread.

This is the time of the year for finishing problems. Finishes do not like cold weather, and lacquer (Deft) likes cold and damp the least of all finishes. If you are having problems with Deft or other finishes, they are most likely temperature related.

Remember that Wally is in Arizona where it is probably 70F today. It is a lot colder than that in Idaho, but I am working in a heated shop where the inside temperature is never below 60F at night.

Words like "Immediately" and "overnight" can be a lot longer than that in a cold shop, and they could be changed to "Never" if your shop is cold enough. You might have to wait until Spring if you working in temperatures close to or below 50F.

There are ways around working with lacquer and other finishes in a cold shop. Keep the sealed can of finish in the house until you are ready to apply the finish. Take the wood into the house and allow it to reach room temperature, or heat it in the oven at its lowest temperature (120-degrees) for a few minutes. Then take the wood and the finish out to the shop, apply the finish, wait a few minutes, and then take both of them back into the house again. If your wife forbids keeping these things in the house, get a heater for the shop, or wait until Spring.

With the strong odor I experienced, this stuff must flash off very quickly. It was setting up very quickly in my shop. One question: Do you see see any problem applying a coat of wipe on poly a day after using Deft? I only ask this because your article describes applying the poly immediatedly after the Deft finish. I usually apply the oil finish as soon as I have wiped the Deft to dry on the lathe. But, sometimes I will put a heavy sloppy coat of the wipe-on finishe on the wood before wiping any of the Deft from the surface, mixing them together, and then wiping both off at the same time; or sometimes I will wait a few days before putting on the oil based finish. Which I do depends on what I am doing, how many pieces I am doing, how much time I have, or what I feel like doing at the time. Sometimes I do different things just to prove to myself that it really doesn't make any difference.

I've noticed I can get a much finer finish (no orange-peel) when I spray in freezing weather, then bring the turning inside to dry. Apparently, the cold delays the drying of the lacquer enough to allow it to settle a bit. I haven't had any problem (yet) with moisture being trapped under the finish turning it white.

Wonder if you have had similar results?

>Last winter (Ontario, Canada), I sprayed a bowl at a friends shop that turned white. We waited till it was dry to the touch before I walked out and put it in the car to go home. The next day it was foggy. After a week it was almost all white.

He had sprayed other turnings at the same time but they were left in the shop to dry and mine was taken out into the cold for about 10 minutes till the car warmed up. Our conclusion was it must have been the warm to cold transition that caused it to turn white.

>Yes, the cold will act the same as a retarding thinner, and that can allow more time for the film to level if it can be controlled. You will always run the risk of condensation of moisture on or in the lacquer when you return it to a higher temperature. That moisture is what causes the blush or cloudy appearance in the lacquer film. If you didn't have that problem, you were either very lucky or were doing all of the right things.
