Truck Ballast or Turning stock?

Dominic Greco in Richboro PA

Hi Everyone,

I ask you, "How pathetic am I?"

The weather forecast is calling for 4 to 8" of snow starting this afternoon and ending some time tonight. I have a 2 wheel drive pick up that handles as well as a Camero in snow (for those of you who don't know, that means "not really well".)

The most obvious answer to this dilemma is to drive SWMBO's 4WD SUV. But what is she supposed to drive? So I end with plan "B". Adding ballast to the back of my pick up. During really heavy snow storms, I just shovel snow in the back. That has worked well. But there wasn't enough of an accumulation last night. So I turned to the only other source I could think of. My precious wood pile.

In order for me to get across the sheer lunacy of this situation, I need to set the mood. It's about 7:00 pm. It's dark and VERY cold in my back yard. So cold that my half Husky, half German Shepherd (I call him a "Shepsky") Boris won't follow me outside like he normally does. So here I am with flashlight in hand, trying to select the logs that will go into the back of my truck. And,.....begin,....!

Me: "No way am I putting that apple in there. That stuff cracks if you look at it funny. And I put way too much effort into getting it to risk it as just ballast. Hmmmm,....the Cherry is too big, and has a nice grain pattern (maybe I'll move this piece into the shop right now....). The Box Elder is too soft (and I might want to cut some up tomorrow night). I don't want to move the Walnut. It's drying so nicely there under the tarp. The Osage Orange is under Walnut, so that's out. Unless I get some help, the rock maple stays where it's sitting. I think that piece there weighs 500 lbs! And it's got some amazing figure (I really need to saw up some more of that. Maybe this weekend....)."

So I move to my second wood pile. I call it the "Islandof Misfit Logs".

Me: "Here's some nice bland Silver Maple. That will do nicely. Oh yeah, some ugly spalted Ash that has a grain pattern that looks like bad oatmeal. Throw that in. Hmmmm, some Sweetgum that has cracks running through it. And we'll top it off with some Poplar. Just because I hate turning Poplar. (Rotten camouflaged log! Serves it right for tricking me into thinking it was walnut!)"

See anything wrong with this? Up until several years ago, a log was just a log to me. See what turning has done to me?

See ya around,

My ugly mug

Dominic

thanks for the laughs!! Too funny!

You asked if anything was wrong with that picture? No, why? :-)

>Hi Dominic,

I understand completely! It's amazing how differently you view logs and timber once you've been turning :) I love that image, out there in the cold, mentally weighing the pros and cons of various pieces of wood.

Here's hoping the storm isn't nearly as bad as they predict. We've only got about 3 inches on the ground down here, but it is mostly hardpacked ice from sleet and freezing rain. No work again today.

Thanks for the laugh,

Mike

I was gonna load the back of my truck with bags of sand.. But wait, I cant use them, theyre holding down my lathe.. LOL..

I'm only laughing because...

Mike Schwing from Mars

>....I have about 500 pounds of white ash in the back of my Suburban for the same reason! Collected it a week and a half ago and decided to leave it in there for ballast. And since you brought it up - a portion of it has spalted into an ugly oatmeal pattern just as you noted. We're all nuts.

>That was hilarious, Dom.

The funniest thing was that my MIL came down in December and had some sandbags in the back of her pickup for better traction. I was thinking "gee, those would sure hold down my lathe nicely". So thats what she gave me for Christmas - 4 each 60lb "Quickrete TubeSand" sandbags from Lowes. They were $1.88 each.

Invest in some then get back to turning all that nice wood ;-)

I told you you should have gotten 4WD. ;-) Great story, and you'd better get some more ugly logs ready, as the weather is getting even uglier!

>Hey Dom, why don't you write a book about the funny side of woodturning? You're good! Bring that turning wood to Arizona. I can look out of my window and see snow on the 9,000 foot mountain peaks a few miles away, but that's as close as it gets.

>Don't think of it as Ballast for the truck - consider that you are Freeze Drying it.

You are a sick man - making your selection in the freezing weather when even your dog is smart enough to stay inside.

I got to reconsider how I chose my friends!! ;)

Stay warm buddy,

Mark

Truly pathetic... and accurate

Rodney Jenkins

>That's a great dilemna.

Good thing you don't rely on wood to stay warm... there just ain't that much wood ugly enough to burn!

Great antecdote.

Like Wally said... bundle 'em up and print 'em.

>Dominic,

I have always found that I get better traction with a fresh load of new wood than with old logs I've already used once ... you need to run out and get more wood when the next storm approaches !

Did it once... bad idea

steve antonucci

>I was a travelling theater presentation of "Logs on Ice". Once the snow covered the bed of my truck, the logs became "mobile", and every stop and go "antiqued" my 1995 S10 a little bit more. My experiment was with 26" half sections of cherry logs (100#+ each.) Ding city.

Now I just use sand, and at the end of the winter (when will it end?), I put it in my kids sand box or as ballast under my Nova lathe.

>Dom, I did the same thing Sat night. I HAVE a 4x4 but my drive way is so steap that I alwasy add a few logs just for god measure. I had just unloaded 8 18x20 in. beech logs last week and Sat. I put them back in the truck.

Glad I did too. We had only 4-5 in snow but have had frezzing rain the last two days. I don't care how much snow and logs you have on the truck it', hard to keep the shiney side up on ice.

Ratchet straps and 2x4s

Dominic Greco in Richboro, PA

>Steve,

Momma Greco didn't raise no fool! :>)

I ratchet strapped those logs down. (2) straps criss cross the bunch. In addition, the logs sit between (2) 2x4s secured in those slots they bend in the bed of the truck. And I'm not worried about the bed either. I got a XLine spray on bed liner. It'll take more than logs to scratch that.

See ya,

Dominic

Boy am I glad I did this!

Dominic Greco in Richboro, PA

>The drive home tonight was NUTS!! I took me close to 2 hours to get home. The roads were a bit slick. But not unlike any other snow storm we've seen. My well weighed down truck performed adequately enough to get me home without one slip. I'm really glad I added the weight.

But I gotta ask this; What is it with all these over anxious drivers out there!? Has the constant media blitz taken away your common sense? If you're that scared to drive, I have (3) words for you.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!

I've never seen so many soccer moms in minivans doing 15 MPH on I-95 while white knuckle gripping the steering wheel!

Sheesh!

Damn, I'm glad to be home.

See ya around,

Dominic

However... I have my chainsaw in their garage... JUST IN CASE I COME ACCROSS WOOD THAT I"VE GOT TO HAVE...

Be Careful What You Wish For

David Propst, King NC

>Hey Dom,

Glad you are home safe. But be careful what you wish for. I had to drive 90 miles Sunday in some nasty icy weather on I-40 as I crawled along at about 35mph in my van. Even the 18 wheelers were moving slow.

I saw a number of wrecks, and at least 75% were SUV's or trucks. Mostly SUV's. It was a particularily bad day for Jeep Cherokees, I saw three that had flipped along the way.

Of course these were the same type vehicles that were passing me at 60-70 mph all day.
