Two more beginner pens

>I got the pen kits I ordered so I am back at it. This pen turning is really fun. The dark one is some kind of cherry. The pic doesn't show it but there is real light and dark wood both in this blank splitting the pen longwise. The other is holly. There is some very faint colorin in it, otherwise it would look like ivory. It is not real functional. I do need to get enough experience to be able to have a feel for diameter size vs functionality. Anyway, this opens up a new turning world for me.

The first pen looks like my 'bulge' pens, which has been a good seller. People like them a lot. Did you burn the grooves?

The second pen is very pretty. As for functionality, some people prefer thick pens.

I often omit the factory center band, especially for thicker pens. A center band can be made of contrasting material or omitted altogether. I get a lot of mileage out of slimline kits that way. I got a lot of good ideas for this out of Russ Fairfield's web site: www.woodturnerruss.com

The 7 mm tubes are available in 10" lenghts. This is handy when you want to make slimline variations and need a little longer tube.

Nice pens! There is some great detail in that bottom pen! Try leaving the centerband out sometime, and see what shapes you come up with! Check out my article over on the Penturners.org site.
