Question: Beads on Bowls

My question is what methods are best for faceplate turnings?

I've been attempting to put 2 closely spaced beads under the rim on the outside of a bowl. Also attempting to put 1 bead on the inside where these beads are a complete half round about 1/4" diameter. Have had some success with a profile ground scraper but with some tearout. Have not been too successful with a skew.

Just wondering if there are some techniques using shear cutting?

I use a scraper for establishing the size. I then use a pointy 1/4" spindle gouge to complete the bead top and part of the sides. I finaly dress up the bottom between the beads with a skew. The tool rest is very close to the bowl.

I am sure there are a lot of other ways to do this which work well. I don't feel like my approach is fool proof or even reliable.

I have been turning wood for about 12 years now. I consume about 20 hours a week in front of the lathe making primarly bowls and platters. I keep thinking about making other "stuff" on the lathe, and ocasionaly I even get beyond the thinking part. But I take the most pleasure in bowls and platters. I have most every tool availble for the lathe but I am always looking for a new tool. More than looking for a new tool I am looking for a new hunk of wood. While a corner woodworker (sometimes called flat woodworker) can never have enough clamps, I find most woodturners can never have enough turning stock. The woodturning club I belong to has a Christmas party each year and part of that party is a "grab bag". We bring in a turning, that is judged by the people who come to the party. The people who make the top three turnings get prizes (like sandpaper or a tool). The real prize though is the exchange of turnings that comes from this colection of turnings. Some of my most cherished turned objects are the ones I have recieved from these grab bags.

>The only way I`ve had any real luck turning beads on the exterior of bowls is to use a detail gouge.The gouge must be held almost straight up+down and rolled to produce the bead.On one face the bevel doen`t rub and it`s more of a shear/scraping action,as you cut over the top you pick up a bevel rubbing cut and roll the bead as you would on a spindle.After reading this I have come to the conclusion that this is probably one of those things that is best seen instead of read.I saw this technique demoed for the first time by Al Stirt,he wasn`t quite sure how to desribe it so I just watched as he rolled afew beads.He then handed me the gouge and I rolled the rest with him coaching.It`s a simple technique,but it requires a detail gouge ground to the proper profile.

Could you post a close-up of your favorite detail gouge profile for this ?

I rough mine in with a fingernail profile detail gouge, then make finishing cuts with a very pointy 3/8" spindle gouge. I'd like to see if your profile might work better.
