I forgot about this myself last weekend during cleanup after one of my local club's hands-on sessions. Using a magnet, I finally found the point embedded down below the ways of the lathe but meanwhile, I spent considerable time sifting through lots of shavings looking for the point.
As others have suggested, the unit is self-ejecting by winding the quill back into the tailstock. If this doesn't work, you may need to realign the groove in the quill with the locking screw. My first lathe, a Delta Midi, worked the same way.
