Smokin' Grizzly Motor

>I own the Grizzly G1012 18" bandsaw. Not a precision cutting Laguna but great for roughing out bowl blanks. I had been having trouble with the motor for quite some time (slow start...changed capacitor) and she finally quit--with a lot of heat and smoke!

I wrote Grizzly and they quoted me $175 for a new 2hp 240v motor. Is this unrealistic? Can I pick up a used one as long as I can get it mounted properly (with same shaft size)?

What should I expect to pay for a decent motor?

Motor wise, if it is an "off-the-shelf" motor they have used, look at the "nameplate" with the specifications on. It will tell you the rated speed current and stuff like that. What it will also have is a Frame code, maybe somthing like "FLxxx" (x numbers). These codes defined the motors mounting points and dimensions. So as long as you can find a motor of the same framesize and suitable shaft, speed and power it should be fine. The other thing to consider is the starting type, your old one sounds like Cap-start or Cap-start/run. The name plate will tell you this. As it is not likely to be starting under load I don't think that is too critical.

If you look around suppliers you might be able to get a new one cheaper too.

Some imports (i.e. Reliant brand) come with some really cheesy motors. Just compare them to the same motor from GE, Marathon, Leeson, etc, and you can see the difference just in the physical construction (not to mention performance and life). I have a Reliant DD90 and the 1hp stock motor used to get so hot under use that you'd get a 2nd degree burn if you tried to touch it. When it finally died, I replaced it with a 1.5hp Delta motor. THAT motor not only gave TONS more power, but doesn't even get remotely warm.

>If you are going to pull the motor out anyway I would try and fix it first. I had a Jet motor do this on my Lathe smoked sparked and died in its tracks. I pulled the back cover off then the fan assy. under neith it there is a set of points (for a lack of the real name) on mine the contacs were fused shut. I popped them apart filed them down and put it back togeather it worked well enough to bring to Sophies BBQ and run the whole weekend. Give it a try can't hurt.

You might want to check out the possibility of repairing your motor. It might not be as bad as it seems. Grizzly used to advertise that they had a complete motor repair facility "in house". You might ask them to quote on a repair.

That switch is the start/run centrifical switch. When the contacts are closed the start windings in the motor and the start cap are in the circuit so the motor will start. As the rpm's increase on the motor, centrifical force over comes the springs and weights (little square metal plates) on it and the switch opens which switches the motor to the run windings. Arcing accures between these contacts and if they are not pressing hard enough against each other they can burn and stick as you described.

The purpose in writing all this is to point out that there is an adjustment on it that controls the pressure on the contacts and also controls when the rpm's are high enough for the switch to activate. This adjustment is controlled by pushing the collar inward, the collar that has the set screw in it that tightens down on the main shaft.

When you turn a motor off that has one of these switches in it you'll hear it snap back, that pop you hear as the motor slows down.

Not having the spec's on each motor and each switch, I general push the collar towards the motor to see how much it will move and then set it at the middle point of travel.
