Tool rest post too short

RPE

>I have a new Delta bowl rest. It was my Dad's. He never used it. I have a PM 3520 lathe. The post on my PM rest is 4.5" the post on the Delta rest is 3.5". Any ideas on how I can make it longer.

It sits right on top of the banjo screws now to be at the right height.

I don't know if welding it will have the necessary strength.

Just looking for ideas. I need the rest!

Thanks

RP

I getting ready to modify my old Delta curved rests. I just bought a 3520. I've done this before with other rests. I buy 1" drill rod because it's much more accurate in size than standard 1' bar you get from lowes.

I weld on a short piece and then grind and file away the weld. (did I mention I'm a terrible welder) They've all worked well so far. I grind a "V" where the weld will be so I can fill that in and get it all back to 1".
