Passive Sanding With ROS

>Will using a random orbit sander as a passive sander do any damage to the internal workings of the ROS? I gave it a try on a footstool I just made. It worked great but I got to thinking it might not be such a good idea.

>I assume by "passive sander" you mean it will not be turned on. I don't know why it would not work, but I suggest you turn the sander on. I have done this when sanding the outside of bowls, etc and it works great. I am also convinced that there were fewer sanding lines to contend with than when sanding by hand.

>I have been doing it for 3 years with a dewalt 5" and have not had any problems with it (knock wood). You might want to blow the works out once in a while with a compressor so the works stay clean.

>It shouldn't make any difference wether its on or off, since it doesn't have a pressurized oiling system. You just might want to blow it out with compressed air after using it awhile.
