>On Monday of last week I ordered a scraper blank from Bernie Meres at Serious Lathe (Versa Steel). To my surprise the scrapper was in my mailbox on Wednesday. What great service from Oregon to Texas. The scrapper was just what it was advertised to be and should do just what I want.

>Bernie Is a real nice guy and has made some real nice tools and lathes. The scrapers I got from Bernie a few years back were huge hunks of steel. The finish on the steel was not polished. A little work with some sandpaper polished the scrapers up nicely.
Why polish a scraper? The top surface is what forms the cutting edge. A smooth flat surface will sharpen to a smooth sharp edge or a consistant bur.
Note that this is not M2 HSS but A2 steel which is a high carbon steel. Pay attention when you sharpen that the tool doesn't get to hot. That will likely not be much of an issue for a big scraper as there is a LOT of steel to carry away the heat.

>Thanks for the heads up. I had discussed the metal with Bernie and know to keep it cool. I use a blue belt sander to grind and sharpen so for something like this I will put on a 36 or 40 grit belt and take my time. Right now we are at the freezing level so if I work in the shop tonight there will not be much problem keeping metal from over heating.
