I don't know how it happened, I guess that it all began when I broke my OEM Jet tool rest. I bought a 6" tool rest from Woodcraft. Then I decided that I needed the curved tool rest from Woodcraft. Then I ran into the Best Wood Tool people - they seemed to know my addition, and how to feed it. Before I knew it I had a large box rest, the 3x9 rest, the heavy duty 12" rest, the large modular bowl rest, and a 3" straight rest. I don't know how it happened, but it did.
Honestly, I have not noticed one bit of vibration or instability with the 1" dia, 12" rest - even at the end. But then again, I do not use this rest for roughing out. I tend to use the 6" rest for that. I use the 12" rest when I am working the outside of the bowl - refining the curves.
I have noticed that that I get lots of vibration on the end of the large modular bowl rest. Discussions with the Best Wood Tools folks have convinced me that the problem there is the 5/8" dia post, and not the 3/4" rest.
In a huge part, I got both of the 12" rests for spindle work.
