>I had a chance to sit through a couple of 1 hour demos by Steve Russell at the Columbus, OH Woodworking Show this past weekend. I was totally impressed! Steve did an outstanding job of explaining what he was doing. From tool positioning to body movement to materials to technique, he was essentially a textbook in action.

His presentation was very practical for beginning/intermediate bowl turners, and he touched on "artsy" techniques just enough to pique the interest but not overwhelm his audience. He did not, like some I have heard, emphasize what HE had accomplished, but on what I could accomplish.

If anybody has a chance to catch a Steve Russell presentation, don't miss it!

>i sat through a couple of his demos earlier this month in the baltimore ww show. COuldn't believe it when he said he sold pens for $3500. My only gripe was the fact that he sounded like an informercial for craft supplies, his sponsor. The meat was very good for a newbie turner.

>He does a good job...a huge reason I turn is one of his demos. He also has good info, based on long term expirimenting, on drying wood unuasually quick. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Atlanta.

>I am fortunate to belong to the same woodrurning club in the Houston area that Steve does. We get to have him periodicly do demos at the club meetings and he is most excellent. He is extremly knowledgeable in the technical aspects of turning, taking a scientific approach to a number of areas. I always enjoy talking to him after the meetings and getting his input, he can always give you a technical answer or a straight up "I don't know". Should you get the chance to catch him inbetween sessions at a demo, ask him about his friends adventure making duck calls with exotic wood. A great story as well as some good info..

As far as the "infomercail", remember who paid his way there. But, Steve isn't going to prostitute his ethics and tell you something good about a POS woodturning product or vendor.

>Thanks to Steve, I no longer live in holy terror of my skew chisel. I still have a lot of respect for it, but he helped me put it to use. I experienced a couple of his demonstrations at the Chantilly VA Wood Working Shows last spring. I wish I had known to spend more of the weekend watching and listening to him.

>...Crafts USA is a top quality company. Can you honestly say that the products he spoke of were not top quality or not an improvement? Also, he took the time to fully answer my questions regarding the Wolverine sharpening jig (at the Somerset show) even though he demonstrated the Tru-Grind jig (which by the way seems superior to the wolverine).

So, yes he advertised a couple products from Crafts USA. Was he trying to sell us crap?, absolutely not. Was he leading us astray?, no way.

His advertising was beneficial to the company that funded his appearance AND his lectures/ads were beneficial to buyers/listeners as well.

Truely a win win situation.
