>Several days ago I posted a message titled "The 6 S's of a Salad Bowl. I have now posted it on my Website, and later, Ellis will be putting it into Russ's Corner here at Wood Central. It has been rewritten, there are now seven S's, and I have included a added a few photos of good and not-so-good salad bowls.

This will be the 1st of 3 articles on the Salad Bowl. Those on turning , sanding, and finishing will be posted when I get the photos taken.

>This is a great article Russ. You have told us that 10-14" is best as far as diameter, but could you give us a range on the depth for the "perfect" salad bowl?

Turn 'em round,

>Excellent information Russ. It gave me a lot to think about. Now I'm going to find some other uses for the black walnut I just harvested!

>That is very reasonable, well thought out advise, Russ.

I haven't attempted to turn a salad serving bowl, but I do make wooden salad tongs for use in wooden salad bowls. I have a corollary to your Seven S's:

Choose salad tongs that are the same length as or an inch longer than the diameter of your salad bowl.

This assumes the customer chose a salad bowl according to your rules for shape, of course. If the tongs are shorter, they slide down and the handles fall into the bowl. If they are longer, especially if the handle is heavier than the tines, then the tines slide to the bottom, and they fall out. Thus, I make them in three different standard lengths, 11", 13" and 15". The two pairs in the picture are 13".

>William,

I see the tongs, but what are the other things in the pic?

Thanks,

~Jay...whom you could tell is not a "big time" salad eater.

BTW...take out the "1" for email

>The other items are soft cheese knives and a spatula.

The knives are for serving brie on crackers, pat, etc., (apetizers, first course) to keep the guests occupied while I'm in the kitchen finishing up the rest of the meal. One is walnut with olive burl leaves; the other is purpleheart with walnut leaves.

The spatula is purpleheart, and is for food preparation, not food serving, and it also works ok for serving things like lasagna. This one is right handed. One curved corner is for scraping the bottom corners of pots and pans, one square corner is for extracting Contadina tomato paste from the small cans.

The tongs are walnut with cherry wedges. One set has roseheart leaves, the other cocobolo.
