>Gary, I do not use steel wool or one of these fibre alternatives to replace sandpaper of any grit. I use the wool on finish between coats. The fine (0000) works best between coats of oil. This is followed be a cotton flannel dusting. I am impressed by the Fibral wool.

i own a body shop and we use these pads all the time (got cases of this stuff).

The non-woven arbasive pads, sandpaper, and steel wool all abrade the wood differently and there is a difference in shape of the scratches in the "scratch pattern" that they leave behind on the surface of the wood.

A recent comparison by Jeff Jewett concluded that the fabrics were best suited for sanding between coats, and the softer scratches from steel wool were still the best for cutting back on the gloss of the final coat.

I tried unsuccessfully to get this information from 3M for some time. One 3M tech rep even told me what a good idea it would be to have it!
