Whatever you buy, ignore "digital zoom" as a feature...sort of like Sears' 5hp shop vac. Optical zoom is the only zoom to compare.

Many cameras let you send the LCD output to a TV. When I do product shots like bowls and plates I hook the camera to the TV and use that big screen to compose my picture.

When you get a short list of cameras to select from go to one of the digital camera review sites like Digital Photography Review or Steves Digicam and check out the reviews for those cameras. It there is a problem you can find out there. When you have selected the camera you want go to Digital Photography Review and ask on the forum for that manufacture if anyone has had a problem with the camera you have decided on. You can do all of this in a couple of hours and be sure you are getting a well made camera for your intended purpose.

There are a lot of other digital camera review sites. Other sites would likely give you good info as well. The reviews over at digitalcamera resource page are my favorites.

The lens rotates into the case for safe keeping and easy storage. My wife picked it up and figured it out right away (big plus). I have the Coolpix 2400 I think is the model number there is a 3200 (I think)out now that has a higher resolution. I would buy another one in a Heart Beat

You don't need more than 3MP, look for known brands like Nikon(my choice),Canon,Minolta,Olympus(my 2nd choice), and even Kodak has some good cameras. Pick one that uses AA rechargable batteries if possible-some use built-ins that are not readily available, and all d-cameras are power hungry.Close focus, color balance pre-sets, auto overrides for focus and exposure are all good features that help in shooting turnings.

Got thm both at Amazon after reading lots at DPreview.com and getting advice from co-workers that had the same model. We love them. I've been pretty happy taking close ups of flowers and such - close enough to see the pollen grains. I like that it comes with its own charger. Its very small and light, has a metal case and feels solid. Hers is a later model and has a few more nifty features. Ours are 2 megapixels. I've printed 8x10 images from them on a run of the mill inkjet on good paper and been real happy with the quality. I bought some extra cards and a reader to make downloading easier.

To make a long story short, my wife paints and wanted to have a camera handy at all times to take shots (sunrises, sunsets, etc.) and I didn't want MY camera being carried around, so she got her own for Christmas!

I can send you some images to look at if you are interested, but DPreview.com has images for most cameras that you can compare.

The optical zoom in my opinion is very important. Also, batteries that can be replaced and charged outside of the camera All advice is excellent.

Many years ago I did some photography, and I still have a pair of professional halogen lights.

The bulbs are replaceable and available. I also have reflector and stands for the lights. I just need to put together a booth, and will be ready to go. Probably some PVC pipe from which I have made a lot of stuff.

So far the Canon A70 looks like a very definite possibility. Some of the reasons:

Known brand, I have other Canon equipment.

Uses regular AA batteries.

3x optical + digital zoom.

Exposure, etc. can be controlled.

LCD and optical viewfinders.

USB and TV output. TV can be used as large viewfinder.

Uses CompactFlash, which is low price and

I have plenty of them already.

Unless I find a better yet camera in that price range, A70 it will be.

I have a few pieces and gizmos I would like to post pics of. If you saw my pic of the spring loaded live center a couple days ago, you will know why I want a better camera. I get very decent pics with film . . . that 640x320 piece of junk does not cut it for what I want. (I know not to post very high resolutions in the web . . .)
