I recently turned a piece of box elder that was very dry, too. I couldn't finish it that day, so I threw it into my LLD bowl. Took it out a couple of days later to finish it, and it turned much easier. I don't know if just throwing it into water with just a spritz of liquid detergent would have helped just as much.
