>This was a piece of box elder with some beautiful curl in it. Unfortunately, the log cracked, but I was able to core out a couple of pieces from it that were without any flaws. I could have thrown out this piece, but it was too pretty, so I got rid of as much of the cracks as I could, and this is what I ended up with. Not the greatest shape---my wife keeps asking me about "the flowerpot"!

It has beautiful shades of yellow in it, which I accentuated by using wipe-on shellac. Looking at it now, I think the foot could be smaller, and I have to get rid of those shadows!

I'm not up to hollow vessels yet, but admire yours. I'd have two comments, take them for what they're worth, remembering from where they came.
1. I would find this form more pleasing if you continued the same profile all of the way down to the foot of the form. The curve as it nears the bottom, to me, is unnecessary and detracts from the nice profile at the top. Same comment I'd make on the walnut/bark pic from earlier. Don't get me wrong, I think they're very nice, and I'm envious of your ability to make them.
2. The text comments on your photos drive me nuts! They're very big and clunky and detract from the pleasant curves and shades of your workpiece. Either use a much smaller, less obtrusive font or leave it out entirely. Fortunately, this is an easy change to make, and only a critique of a font.
I always feel guilty giving comments like these, even when they're asked for.

Re the text---you know, I never thought of it being detracting. I'll need to go back and look at my pics from that viewpoint, and see how they can be changed to make it more subtle.
Re the curve at the bottom---I can't seem to help it! Almost all my pieces have it, and it's like the gouge has a mind of its own, and creates that ogee shape. I'm going to have to try what you suggested (I'm aware of it), but have to do it consciously on my next forms.
To Mike and all others, I DO mean it when I ask for comments---I find that I learn by "making mistakes" (both mine and those of others), and I need others to point it out. I may decide to leave things the way they are, but, at least, it's a conscious decision then.
