With due respect for an expert like you, if you need to use a mallet to make the tube go into the blank, there can be two consequences:

1. There will be areas with little or no glue between the tube and the blank. As the blank gets smaller it could break while turning.

2. Since the hole is too small, any movement or drying of the wood can cause cracks that can show immediately or months later.

The tube should be a loose fit in the blank. It should slide freely in the blank, but not too loose. I much prefer epoxy to glue them.
