Some will say you should get the 16"...not so much for the extra swing (I regularily turn 17" bowels outboard) as for the VS as a safety factor since you can turn the speed lower. I have found that, since I turn 100% outboard, and am ALWAYS out of the line of fire, that is not an issue. Have I had some dismounts? Yep...but I was out of the way and no damage done.

I like the lathe, and I like Jet equipment. I just got a Jet midi 1014 a couple of weeks ago for pens and think it is a quality piece of equipment also. It's just past noon and I've turned 30 pens so far today with it.

Are there "better" lathes than the Jets? Probably, but not at anywhere near the price IMNSHO.

I also got my 1442 just about a year ago and I am very happy with it. The fit and finish on the lathe was excellent and the swing meets my needs. A VS would be nice to get lower speeds but budget was a factor. The lathe weighs just about 400 lbs. with the legs. If you want to weigh it down more check out Dominic Greco's article on building a ballast box to fit this lathe. I did run into one small issue with my 1442 about two months ago. The coating that goes on the lathe prior to shipping was everywhere and caused the fine dust from sanding to cake up the pulleys and I was no longer able to change speeds. A fair amount of cleaning and plenty of wd40 was necessary to free up the pulleys and get things operational again. I have not had any problems since. Good luck with the lathe. I am sure you will be happy with it.

Very quiet probably because of its construction and out-of-box weight. While most of my work to date has been small, vibration is non-existent. I did experience a little stiffness in the speed control early on. About the time I was going to call Jet, it loosened up and has been fine since.
