>Take a look at the Nova Compac chuck. It is not as versatile as the SuperNova, but it only costs in the neighborhood of $80. It is available with a 1" 8 tpi thread to fit the Jet Mini. It is light weight but had pretty good holding power. It is limited in jaw movement so that your tenon or recess needs to be more precise.

Congradulations on the Twins. They are going to take up a BIG space in your life. Save the woodturning adventure for a year or two or three.

In answer to your chuck question. The Oneway jaw design holds wood more securely over a wider range of tennon sizes than any other jaw design. When you are just starting out a secure grip is real important.

>Anthony, to answer your original question, no, there is no chuck better than the Super Nova for the price. I've used one on my Jet mini for about a year, and it's held everything I threw on it. Any flyoffs were completely due due to operator error.

>Anthony when looking at chucks I dont think you are looking for only one you want to start a system so when you up grade or change lathes your acceseries can stay with you first thing is to have a chuck that has a insert so you can use on other lathes by changing the insert insted of bying addapters. Next look at jaw design I was talking to a turner last weekend that was telling me how much he liked his oneway and then was telling me he had a piece come off the lathe and he had bent the jaws if you look at the cross section of the oneway nova and the vicmarc you will see that oneway is the thinnest vicmarc is the thickest. Next look at accessory jaws the oneway talon has 3sets to chose from the stronghold and oneway jaws DO NOT FIT the talon. Nova and vicmarc have more the vicmarc also has a sealed body and uses a metric hex wench to adjust the others have a special key if you lose it you have to order a new won the vicmarc you can get a wrench near you. this is what I wish I knew when I went looking for my first chuck I would have bought the vicmarc I have also noticed in my own travels and talking with pro turners that they prefer the vicmarc.
