They are very nice pens, and I like the shape.

I turn a lot of slimlines in that shape. In my opinion besides looking nice, it is easier to grip. For lack of a better pen, I call it the "bulge" ... or Slimline Ultra for the customers ! I sold a bunch during the last holiday season.

When I turn this type of barrel, I round the end that meets the centerband a little. Also sometimes I make my own centerbands from a contrasting material. Scrap corian, ebony, blackwood, padauk, etc. can be used.

>Julie, try to find a place that does counters. Usually they have a lot of scrap which is plenty large enough for pens.

I also do like Fred does and make the pen a little thicker and round of the ends with the skew. The advantage here is that if your mandrel is off, it won't be so apparent. I also hate that I have so much material and that I turn it down to chips and it gets waisted. This way I use more material and the pen has more heft to it.

>Hello! I have not tried them, but Woodcraft carries corian pen blanks, that have allready been drilled and a 7 mm tube glued in. The blanks are already ROUND, I think about 5/8" dia.

There are corian blanks on ebay most of the time.

If they tell you they don't carry CORIAN just ask them for NAIROC ... they are a bit backwards on that name. (hey, I am not kidding... this is the truth)

www.woodturnerscatalog.com has a great assortment of man-made blanks.. cough cough... person made blanks.

Drilling Corian Blanks

I blew them out until I made a pen drilling jig. I actually used a tenon jig that I had lying around. Also, I go very slow as I get near the botton of the blank, taking very small bites with the drill bit. So far it is working. :)
