Small hollowing tool shapes

>I'm looking to buy some small/medium sized hollowing tools for use on my Jet mini. After looking at what's available, I noticed that there are two camps, bent and curved.

Some sets include tools that are bent at various degrees, like 40 / 80 or 40 / 90. Other sets offer two curved tools, one less curved than the other.

Are there any practical differences between the two designs? Does one style reach the inside lips better, or produce a cleaner cut, or provide more support (i.e. - less torque) when in use?

Any thoughts?

>Kelton has a small set that is good up about 6" deep. The hollowers are $62.99 and you need a handle also. I have a set and like them very much. The set has one each, stright, slight curve, and heavy curve.

Others out there but I like the Kelton hollowing tools. If you are in a club someone may have a set you can try. It's nice to have friends with money and tools.

>The tool shape will dictate to some extent the shape of the piece. If you draw the cross section desired the required shape can be worked out fairly easily. By drawing the tool shape you can work out the shapes it can cut. The biggest factor is the width of the opening.

BTW hollowing tools are easy to make there have been a number of discussions about the methods. Try doing a search.

You didn't say what you were planning on making. That will have some effect on the tools you need or that we can recommend. They are pretty easy to make. I'll be glad to help. I've made quite a few small hollowing tools and a few big hollowing tools.

1/4" Allen Wrench

>I like to use a 1/4" allen wrench glued into a tool handle. The short end can be sharpened and it works very quickly on ornaments.

>Try heating the 90 degree angle with a propane torch and bending out to about a 45 or 135 degree angle depending on how you measure. Round the end, grind the top and angle to about 80 degrees or so for a great little scraper for Christmas ornaments and such. Mount in a small version handle.
