>OK, so I get this e-mail from Rockler yesterday and they have the Jet Midi (they call it Mini) lathe on sale for $199.99. Seems like a good deal for someone just getting into turning. I'm thinking with an extension bed I could use it for spindles as well as smaller items.

I am, however a conspiracy theorist and therefore suspicious of what I think might be a close out price if Jet is about to release a new model.(Think Anaheim and Springfield.) Today I get a Woodcraft catalog in the mail and, low and behold, they have the same deal, as well as other discounts on Jet tools. So now I'm imagining the Jet BOD being called out by the SEC for who knows what evil deeds.

Can anyone shine a light on this for me? Is it simply a good deal I should jump on or should I wait? I don't need a lathe today but have a project coming up in the next month or two.

If you guys don't know then no one does.

Jet just came out with a Mini that has variable speed so they reduced the cost of the one you are looking at. It is a very good bargain. I've thought about buying one myself and I don't need it. It's just too good a deal. The jet mini is one of the more popular lathes on the market.

>That 199.99 price is standard since the debute of the variable speed mini lathe by jet...I have the standard also, payed 250.00 for mine on sale, and it has been a real good machine for me, a beginner of about 2 years now...I enjoy turning on it, I don't put hundreds of hours a month on it, but I play...good buy...variable speed control would be a comfort, but changing the belt/pulley isn't hard and takes a second..the additional bed would be nice, but sounds like you have to do some maching to make it fit, the bed isn't pre-drilled for the additonal bed...Dennis

>...on a good lathe, but hold out for a free leg set. If the place you are looking at balks, just point out that Yahoo has it, with free legs and shipping, for the 199 price. Most folks will match that.

However my it got much more exciting when I discovered a link to Amazon.com with a price on the Jet 1236 for $399.99. And... it includes free shipping and a $25.00 promotion code. I knew I should have searched by model number. So I now have 5-9 business days to figure out where to put my new $374.99 lathe.

I've got that all too familiar feeling I noticed when I started down the slippery slope to Neanderthaldom. Now I need a starter set of tools.

Thanks one and all for the advice. I knew I came to the right place.
