That one little trick of cutting almost all the way through one side of the pith, then cutting all the way through on the other side, has saved me tons of effort. I hate to say it, but I doubt I'd have come up with that on my own.
I've been a chainsawing fool since I bought my new Stihl 360Pro. What a great tool! Didn't go bigger because I only weigh 140pounds, can't hold much more than the 360. Somehow I have accumulated nearly 100 bowl blanks in no time flat. All of those downed hurricane Isabel logs, I've finally gotten to them. There are so many!
One in particular - drove up to the house where a massive black oak - every bit of 60" diameter fell and has been lying, bucked, since September. I'm not a huge fan of oak, but there is so much of it, so I asked the man if I could have some. "Sure, take all you want. Before you go, let me show you whats around back." - What was around back? A giant silver maple, a large black walnut, a butternut, and a big ash, all on the ground, just waiting for me. Been looking for a maple in particular. Keeping the saw in the truck, stopping by on the way home most every day and taking a little.
Anyway, thanks. I think of you every time I cut to one side of a pith.
