Metal Lathe Conversion??

Anthony Tarracino

>Hello

I am looking to possibley purchase the metal lathe in the picture below.

It is made in the US and is very solid. (Unfortunately I do not know the manufacturer)

I was wondering if it could be converted to turn wood.

Does anyone reconize this lathe? (How much might it be worth?)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Anthony from Miami

>That looks like a metal spinning lathe. It's probably worth more than a new wood lathe.

>I don't know the name of it, but it appears to be a wood lathe, called pattern makers lathe in those days.

Note it already has the wood lathe tool rest and the flat leather belt even seems intact. You can still get the flat belts so I don't see anything that needs converting unless you want variable speed motor on it.

These were used to make a wooden pattern that would be used for metal spinning or to use pattern to make a mold to cast parts etc.

It's limitation would be the size it will turn, probably 10 or 12" diameter.

Belts can be gotten from www.loganactuator.com the company that made the Logan metal lathes in Chicago. Check out their site.

>I would guess metal spinning also becausd of the way the tailstock spindle moves. You have to move the tailstock up against the work, spin the piece and then pull the tailstock away. On small pieces they can spin these in 30 seconds so it's important to be able to move the tailstock rapidly.

I can't see the tool rest well enough but if it's flat and has a series of holes in it it is a metal spinning tool rest.

If you want to sell it let me know.
