it seems like a nice lathe for a beginning bowl turner like me (i already have a jet mini). its a varible speed model with a 2hp motor. any help would be appeciated.

>If that is a stocked item and you have an HF within driving distance, it is worth going there for a couple of reasons...
1 - The "laying on of hands". Looking at it up close, seeing how well it is machined, etc.
2 - The full replacement extended warranty. For a few bucks a year, HF stores offer "no questions asked" full replacement warranties. You just have to bring the item in if it fails and they give you another.
I would be a bit more leery about ordering one in that price range sight unseen.

They have the cheap ones, and the 12x36 cast iron bed only. Too bad, I would like to look at one too. Looks like a Delta I saw at Woodcraft.

>Sorry. I just checked their on line manual for the lathe and this is the old style Craftsman. It uses a DC direct drive motor and can be very noisy because of the gear driven shaft. On the other hand, I used this model for every thing from pens to 18" bowls. The new Craftsman model has a more powerful and quieter Reeves drive. I suspect that HF got a deal on the older models but I do not know for sure.

i figured that it was a decent size varible speed lathe with plenty of power for bowls. i'd probably have to order through they're site.

You are probably right about them getting the "left-overs" on special. If you look on HF, you'll find that they now carry the old version of the Woodfast M-series lathes too.
