>My Dad and I harvested a cherry stump a few months back, and its been tickling the back of my mind ever since. It was full of color, and potential if I could get a hold of it - I've been waiting on the new shop to have a go at it, and two nights ago I had my chance. I couldn't decide whether or not to try for a huge natural edge peice, or just lop the stump in half and turn two normal salad bowls... After that post down the page a bit, with the link to Gary Stevens website, I had to go for it.

I just bolted a big faceplate to the butt of that stump, the whole thing, and my brother and I heaved it onto the VB. I started going at it, and after yesterday night and tonight I've got about seven and a half hours just roughing the outside, and about half the inside of this peice. It's a long way from finished, but I'm enjoying trying something very different for me; talk about something that'll keep you on your toes! I'm having a blast working on this peice; I hope you guys enjoy the pictures.

>Thanks, Keith - we'll see if I get any glory out of this peice, if I can take it all the way through the tung oil and buffing rag, and when somebody likes it as well as I do - and likes it enough to pay me for it!

>Yep, I really do need a bigger gouge. That Texas style Sorby is nice, but not near heavy enough - that Huge 3/4 Glaser, with a really heavy handle looks so nice, but man, at 200 hundred bucks, it's pricey! I'll post another pic later, I finally finished roughing the peice - about ten hours total. And yes, that cherry end grain will lift ya' oughta your shoes...
