grinder safety

A good point was brought in another d-group on turning to always check stone grinder wheels for damage by holding them with your finger or rod loosely through the hole and thumping the with your finger to make sure they ring solid like a bell. If it doesn't never put it on a grinder, it could explode in your face and probably would if not from the speed from the heat generated by sharpening. Also never use your grinder for aluminum or brass or any other soft metal or wood. these will load up in the wheel and when sharpening your tools the heat could cause the wheel to explode. If you need to grind soft metals use a sanding disc or belt sander. I've had to sit through horror films at work on what happens in these situations and in an open shop it is not the person who loaded the wheel with aluminum that gets hurt it is the next person that needs to sharpen tool steel that causes the stone to heat to explosion point.

Have a fun and safe time turning

Thanks, Larry

Your advice is well taken. I'll never forget hearing about a local fellow who was killed by an exploding grinding wheel about 15 years ago. I don't know what he was doing at the time of the accident, but the mere fact that one of these things can do you in is enough to get my attention. I use the grinder's safety shields every time I grind anything, and if I'm just touching up a tool in the middle of turning, I keep my face shield on.
