turning disaster

I recently tried to make the Compote in the recent Wood Magazine. I glued up 3/4 in to make make the stock. I was using Kiln dried Cherry. The turnings did nothing but chip and gouged,,what a mess..any ideas, I am firly new at turning but can make simple spindles

TIA

Re: turning disaster

Hi David

What is a compote? There are lots of things that can happen to cause the results you describe, from the wrong tool to a dull tool to the wood itself. Once someone educates me a little here, I might be able to give you an intelligent answer.

Re: turning disaster

It looks like a bowl on a spindle. I rough cut the circle and tried a rough gouge to make it into a circle.

Re: turning disaster

Hello David,

I haven't seen the article but if the wood glue is a stack lamination that exposes end grain spaced around your turning it is hard to get a clean cut. I use a very sharp side ground bowl gouge that I can either use the small center area of the nose to take less of a bite than a roughing gouge when starting to shape and the side of the bowl gouge in a shear scraping attitude when getting close to final shape. If the lamination is cross grain oriented remember to cut from smallest diameter to largest for best grain support and least tearout. Light cuts with a freshly sharpened scraper will also work.

Hope this helps

Re: turning disaster

Hi David

Roughing gouge + end grain = disaster, but it seems you are finding that out on your own. A bowl gouge, as mentioned, is probably your best option, regardless of the orientation of the grain. Additionally, the gouge should be ground back to remove the "ears", or the pointy corners that are present on most new gouges.

I'm still not real clear on how this thing is supposed to look. Is it more like an egg cup, or more like a cake plate you would see in some diners? I tried to go to the WOOD site to see if I could see a picture, but they were down when I tried.

Re: turning disaster

Bill think of a cake platter on a stand, then instead of a flat platter, a bowl in it's place. That is a compote. Something akin to a soup tureen.

Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

Thanks John

To me, compote is somthing thick and fruity I put on my pancakes. ;-) I have a cake saver from Craft Supplies and I am supposed to be making a base for it for my lovely SWMBO, and I had thought abou tsdoing a pedestal kind of thing for it, similar to what is being described here.

Re: Ohhhhh, I get it....

Hi Barbara

Thanks much for the offer, but Dave sent me a picture of the compote last night, so my ignorance has been alleviated. It actually looks like an interesting item to make, so I might give it a try. Of course, I have to get Lisa's cake holder done before I even THINK of somehting like that.
