cedar finish

I turn primarily red cedar but have had some problems with the polyeurethane finish on some items "blistering" later. Does anyone out there have a suggestion of what finish, if any, I could use on cedar?

By the way, this forum is just what I have been looking for. Thank you.

Re: cedar finish

I have tried some Behlen's Salad Bowl Finish, a wiping varnish with a nasty habit of skinning-over in the can. This would be on some Eastern Red Cedar, which is not particularly eastern, nor particularly red, and its not even a cedar. ("North American Pink Juniper" just doesn't have that ring to it.) I used this for the first time about one month ago on a piece of well-dried "ERC" and so far have not noticed any blistering problems. This is not much of a sample, I grant you, but it might be worth further experimenting.

I have had good luck with Velvit Oil, buff with Beall System and spiff up when needed with Clapham's Salad Bowl Finish.

I had the same problem with poly on white oak. Try thinning with mineral spirits about 50/50 and wipe on the first couple of coats.

Re: Velvit Oil

I should have mentioned that I really like the Velvet Oil that I got from Barbara G. She is much too gracious to mention that she is a distributor for this fine product.
