I made... a thing.

I'm in between projects and I was bored because I didn't have anything to do last weekend. So I have pulled a project from a list of projects that I wanted to build, but that don't have any practical purpose. It took me just 7 years to get to this particular list item.

Pretty sure you guys recognize this... thing and already know who is the original designer, but just in case - it's Richard McGuire of "The English woodworker" fame. It's titled "A spoon rack" (whatever that might mean) and I think Richard offers a video class, but this one was kinda stolen from his promo video. Richard made a grave mistake of mentioning one basic dimension, that was all I needed. A few things were done differently and I think it would be better to follow original design to a letter - molded parts don't look good. Also pardon the mess, photos are dark only to hide some of it.

Thinking of scavenging design, back in my 'artichoke' (architecture) days one of the key visual references were bathtubs. So to throw off [other] thieves our marketing floor plans were 'adjusted' at the standard tub.

Architects&designers

Bruce, do you think that being an architect helps being a better furniture designer? Or in other words is there some method that's employed by architects that helps a designer who just doesn't have a mental picture of a piece until it's completed? I'm talking about the "looks", how a piece should be constructed is easy.Of course there are 3D CADs, but that's something I'd like to avoid.

A long time ago when personal computers weren't this widespread I was helping a few of my friends with computers to make a digital copy of some design. But it always started with a finished sketch, often quite detailed, so drawing it on a computer was quite a mechanical procedure. Besides, I can't really figure how any of the popular products help honing an idea. E.g. if I design something, a wardrobe or something, and then decide I want different height to width ratio - it's pretty much a start over. Or am I doing it wrong?

What we think are more important can be a can of worms. Look at Paul Sellers sketch work. It's accurate enough to build from, and more importantly, tweak for final design. A famous building was designed on a napkin; or some like to think so. I am partial to the subject line.

I think building a CAD file of your (McGuire's) spoon box is pretty much overkill. The whole thing can be mocked up in cardboard to reveal and assess design, which is what you want in the first place. Once the requirements shrink to mechanical scale and you are using off-shelf items to build, the computer gets important. I design in computer because I have both the machine and software; and I don't have space for my table and drafting tools. I gave away all my drafting film and paper. 

Besides, a cad file is only as good as the hardware that can read and plot it.... Or, show it on a monitor screen.

There were several drafting softwares in the 80's before AutoCad acquired the premier title. I adopted CAD a few years (shortly) after pc's and the GUI became popular in A and E offices. Engineers--my contact was civil---were using plot-printing design well before  AutoCad and the space shuttle design file showed up. Points were plotted to a sheet of paper, I think 22" width, and the draftsman/person connected the points and drafted in the features by hand.

Up until the mid-nineties I could design-draft my work by hand faster than via computer; the engineers could plot reproducible hardcopies, where mine were still one-off originals. My one-offs went out the door pretty often with the CAD plots. That's how I knew my capabilities. 

Pretty quickly, blueprints to be made from plotted tracings turned into the computer sending to a $100-grand plotter that printed the entire document in a few minutes.

A couple years before I retired everyone wanted me to hand render projects for their office walls. Computer illustration was just too boring.

My issue not the transferring a draft to material, so I'm not even thinking about Autocad dimensional drawings for every piece being built. What's  hard for me is to explore ideas. When a piece is sketched, it's at a smaller scale and proportions become very important. A little miss of 1/4" on a sketch translates to proportions going from 1:2 to 2:3 or something like that. In simple words I'd like to know what happens if I'd make the rack 3" higher or 2" deeper, would it still feel "pleasant"? SW like Sketchup or Blender can do it for boxy\blocky type, but if a general form is a combination of other forms or design has details like joinery, doors, components  - they struggle. Technically speaking I'm looking for parametric design, just without a computer. And I can't draw well, like, I'm not born with this talent, but I think it can be trained to some degree. So far I've been doing plan and elevations and figured overall design, then I might transfer it to a bigger drawing (my setup is just a 4'x4' MDF and a T square). But I tend to get sucked into the technical aspects of it - proper line types, shading, correct projections, etc. So I was wondering what architects do to develop this sense, sure they train it? So far one suggestion was to sketch pieces and buildings that I like, trying to make a precise sketch. Cardboard models also something I'll explore, thanks for the tip. But maybe there's anything else? I was asking around at local art studios, but people seem don't get what I'm after, so they start explaining about perspective and suggest a draughtsman pocket reference or something like that.
