My question is this: when cutting dovetails, I see experts(e.g. F. Klausz) sometimes lightly deepen the scribe line. Most of the time they don't, and they emphasize making the first chisel strike a tiny bit away from the scribe line so as not to force the wood away from the chisel. I understand what's going on. But, still, in very soft wood, like redwood, is it a good idea to lightly intensify the scribe line first with a chisel -- or not? If it's a bad idea, why do it even a little bit?
