Bridge City Tools

Do these perform as well as they look?

Re: Bridge City Tools

Nobody knows. I've seen very few used ones that weren't with their original boxes and in perfect condition.;)

There was an early version of their block plane that reviewed well and was quite a looker. It was brass and rosewood. The new spaceship inspired ones look like they are strictly for the collectors market. I do like the brass and rosewood marking gauges and squares but the performance of squareness and marked lines should be available for much less money.

The new stuff is made in China since Bridge City now has a Chinese parent. Kind of takes the justification for price down a couple of notches, at least for me.

Re: Bridge City Tools

Yes they do. I started buying in the late 90s, and bought quite a few blemished tools since they would be used and the money saved was substantial. I have 27 tools in my collection. Mostly layout and measuring. As an example I took my BCT level into work to set up a new 5'x10'x3' Z axis CNC. When the company man came for final installation check and some training, he brought out a very accurate Starrett machine level with a ground and graduated glass vial. He checked all over the machine and said there was no improvement to be made. So just as good as a $250 Starrett.

Re: Bridge City Tools

These have gone through substantial evolution over the years. Manufacture may have been local (USA) at first but China has done production for many years prior to company sale to Chinese businessmen.

The one thing I see in the Bay second hand market is metal staining/corrosion. That said, if I had a burning desire for a BCT I'd go bid them like any other second hand tool, 50% of original for max.

I have a single BC tool …

I have had a Bridge City 2x2 saddle square for over a decade. It is hinged at the centre, which enables it to fit any angle. As seen in the middle of the drawer below, it rests with precious (but frequently used) squares from Colen Clenton and Chris Vesper.

It is highly recommended!

Best wishes for the festive season.

Agree on the staining and corrosion.

About 6-7 years ago I called Bridge City about the stains/corrosion on my 24” adjustable T square, saddle squares, panel gauge, 12” combination square, and in the proprietary Juara wood inserts. I was told that Bridge City no longer does any cleaning/recalibration work without charge. Representative advised me to just send the tools in to determine if the tools could be cleaned and what the cost would be.

When I about the Bridge City policy to clean or recalibrated without charge, I was told “not anymore.” I came away with the feeling Bridge City just could not be bothered.

Something like Maas metal polish cleans them right up

Flitz or Maas are recommended on the BCT website.

Before I called Bridge City, I unsuccessfully tried the Fitz. I'll try the MAAS

If the stains are really bad, some 0000 steel wool with one of the polishes makes for shorter work.

Or maybe a grey 3M scotchbrite pad, or equivalent by Norrton.
