Atkins Saw, Saved.

Atkins Saw, Saved.

Picked up an Atkins a while back. I quite like it's no frills look and the steel back on this is actually quite heavy. Sadly it turned up with a broken handle, eBay, it happens! Just tidied it up. Making a saw vice at the moment as I don't care much for the Woden one I have.

Great Restoration Job.  I have restored several saws myself, and find it satisfying when sharpened and it "swishes" through the wood with the greatest of ease.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Ron! I'm looking forward to getting my saw vice made. I'm not that keen on the one I have, I have to stop and start as it's quite short.

Re: Atkins Saw, Saved.

That is pretty amazing.

What type of screwdriver do you use in those slots? The slots on my saws are very narrow and wide.

Thank you, Bruce.

Steve, It was just a generic flat bladed screwdriver. If I did more I would buy one and grind to make a really nice fit.

Graham.....since we have similar bench vises, take a look at this design......it just rests on the guide rods, is inexpensive, very effective, and can be made as long as you may want.....

Saw vise

I have an old Disston #3, but am planning on making one similar to yours, Roger. The cast iron of mine is lined in leather, which damps vibration quite well, however the length of the vise jaws could benefit from being longer and stiffer.

A while back, I was very interested in a saw vise designed by Rob Cosman. Similar to the one you show, but with cut away for handles. In the video (below), he places it in a Moxon vise, rather than a face vise. This grabbed by attention since higher up is preferred.

Roger, that's a great solution. Quick and pragmatic!

Derek's is just like my Woden. I don't care for it. So I'm taking inspiration from the vice shown in George Ellis's Modern Practical Joinery.

It won't be better than yours but I guess I'm being a tart 😉. Lovely bench btw.

Re: Saw vise

I have a small assortment of saw vises. My old cast iron one has a semicircular groove in one of the jaws into which I've glued a length of flexible rubber tubing. I also have the Gramercy saw vise from Tools for Working Wood. It works very nicely, but could use a couple coats of Rustoleum. That's the shop's problem, not the vise's. For my chainsaw, I just clamp the bar into a mechanic's vise that I've bolted to a block of wood that is in turn clamped in my shoulder vise.
