Basic Boxes

Basic Boxes

A scrap bin and spare hinges project. Very simple little boxes. The only thing of note is being able to make use of grain direction for the lids and fronts.

Ash, Brown Oak and Cedar of Lebanon base.

It's the last of the Christmas gifts. Next project is some shoe storage.

Full disclosure, machines cut and planed the wood. I just cut it up and joined it. I appreciate this is pretty low brow stuff. I blame Derek for encouraging participation!

Re: Basic Boxes

How do you get the lids to stay part way open?

How will they be finished?

Re: Basic Boxes

Never to early, Derek! The shops are starting to stock festive stuff now. Happy Christmas to you. The DT's are okay, contrasting timber is move forgiving.

Bill, the lids stay open by merit of the knuckle of the hinge being tight. That'll soon go but it made for a nice photo. I'm going to use some sanding sealer and maybe some wax.

Thanks for the interest gentlemen.

Re: Basic Boxes

Thanks Roger. The forums seem quieter these days. I never had the plums for Wood Central back in the day!

Good to find people to converse with on a subject we all enjoy.

Re: Basic Boxes

I appreciate the craftsmanship, but I prefer delicate material thicknesses in small boxes. I want the box to be as light as the little items that go into them.

Re: Basic Boxes

Graham......you are a maker of things......by my estimation, there are less than two dozen people who post here that actually make things and show those things.....so, you are very welcome to join in "Plums" or not......the site needs people to make things and show the stages involved and the problems/challenges that a maker faces as a project progresses.....

Graham must be a name that is somewhat common in the UK......I know of Graham Nash.....The Hollies/CSN&Y......now, you.....welcome again.

Re: Basic Boxes

Dick, I appreciate the critique, I would tend to agree. I wanted the dovetails to be a feature and the hinge choice forced me this way. I'm not great with small projects! These do look more "crafty" than anywhere near "fine".

Re: Basic Boxes

Roger, my wife and I joke there are no famous Grahams! And further we wonder who would look at a baby and think Graham!

Well done for highlighting some Gs. Graham Hill is my pick, "Mr Monaco".

Critique, encouragement it's all welcome.
