Narex 1/8

Some of the best craftsmen here have consistently recommended having a 1/8" chisel. So, when I came across an unhandled chisel by Narex complete with brass ferrule and leather washer, I bought the package and turned a very simple (yet comfortable) handle.....and now, I too have this thin little tool in my chisel drawer.....

What is the best solvent for removing the protective coating on these tools??

Lacquer thinner. Let it soak, takes a bit of time.

Re: Narex 1/8

Roger, that is a great handle. Sooo much nicer than the standard Narex style.

I use a 1/8" chisel for dovetailing. In fact, it is probably the most common size I use. The downside of the Narex is that the blade is shaped somewhat like a mortice chisel, with slab sides.

There is a way to modify the rather slab-sided Narex chisel into one perfect for fine dovetails, and yet retain the strength of a firmer chisel. The latest copy of FWW magazine published my tip on it shop tip page.

Witherby parer getting the treatment ..

Here is a link to my website for the full method ...

Thank you, Bruce......I'll have it soaking later today.

Re: Narex 1/8

Derek.....yes, this Narex does have the same profile of a mortise chisel and wouldn't be a good choice for dovetails......but, I thought I'd pick it up anyway and see if I'd find much use for one this size......it was fun making/adding a handle and I need the practice......I've got a few LV dovetailing chisels with the thin lands......but, their 1/8" chisel is over 4 times as much.....so, I'll wait on that and see if a real need develops.

Very nicely done, Roger! Although nothing beats the ones we make ourselves, I find the 8116 and the Richter to be comfortable.

Re: Narex 1/8

Thank you sir......it didn't take me long to find a use for this small thin blade......on the Messages forum, I'm making a wood flag and found this chisel useful in helping to clean up the tight curves in the relief numbers I made today on the flag's union.
