wobbly brace bit extension

wobbly brace bit extension

My newly acquired extension cannot grip bits tightly enough to prevent some wobble, and I don't know if this is common or not.

I'm thinking of trying to find some steel 'leaf' stock to use as shim around the shaft of the bit. Comments?

Hi Joe, what kind of bits are you using, square tanged augers, hex shanked, or modern round bits? It is common to get wobble with the big box store extensions and actually if the bit itself is not completely concentric, you can see some wobble there. There are options, however, based on the bits you’re using.

Thanks.

I've actually tried a variety of bits, but my purpose is to use either Irwin or Jennings pattern bits. The extension is an old Millers Falls tool designed for those bits. I had some success last night in mitigating the wobble, by cutting slivers of brass shim stock to help the jaws grip the shank better. That approach seems promising so far.

Joe, you shouldn’t get any wobble with a good extension. I use a Stanley (I think it’s #180-18”) and it is absolutely rock solid. So much so that I sometimes have trouble getting the bit out. You can often find them on eBay in new condition and for not a lot of money. The other one I have is (I think) a Stanley #3-18” extension and it, too, holds well, but I prefer the other one. You might try a different extension as you shouldn’t need to shim the square ended augers to hold. At least that’s been my experience.

OK, thanks, I'll take a look at them. I appreciate the feedback.

Kevin, thanks. I've now got a 180-18 on order.

I have a bunch of those of different lengths. I got one in a flea market that didn't adjust easily so I took it apart and cleaned it up. It works fine now. Maybe a sticky thread is keeping it from tightening properly.
