LN Dowel plate repair

Jack Guzman from Maine

I use a dowel plate attached to my shave horse for sizing tenons on spindles. I've done so many that the most used holes are rounded over on the entry side. Can this be sharpened up? The holes are tapered,so removing material off the top will enlarge the holes. I suppose I could just buy a new plate but I'd like to try to fix this one.

Jack.....I believe that per LN, you can sharpen up your dowel plate by flattening the face surface of your plate. You should be able to call LN in the morning and get a direct answer from them. I don't think you have to buy a new one just yet.

got one I can borrow?

I called LN and they told me to give it a few passes over a sharpening stone or similar.

Yes

Interesting to me, I was watching a Rob Cosman video a few days back and he had a LN plate on his bench. It looked quite worn. He mentioned that he laps the top (and probably the bottom as well) to keep the edges sharp.

Stoning should work fine...especially if you keep up with it.

If it has gone beyond that and you wish to send it to me I would be happy to do a fine grind.
