On to making the tote.

again, wasting wood as fast as I can outside the lines.

Using the drawknife with the grain where it is possible and chiseling cross grain down the the outline

From this point all the shaping was done with my knife.

Finished tote. On my earlier plane builds, this is the point where I round all the carved facets with a half-round file and then move on to sandpaper. And every time a felt that the file destroys the nice cut surfaces. So, this time I´m leaving the tote as it is off the knife, taking extra care that the tearout is minimal. The faceted surface feels great in hand and will hopefully wear gracefully with use.

fitting the tote to its mortise. Drilling out most of the waste and then carving a small bevel to the scribed pencil line. Then with a incannel chisel I work this bevel straight down to the bottom of the mortice. I´m using a router plane to level the mortise bottom, removing the last mm down to the right depth.

Here the finished wedge, tote, strike button and all mortising done. Clean up, eyes and bevels to the plane body still missing.

Carving the eyes, again with the knife. Certainly my most used tool.

and done, in the white. Glued up, all edges chamfered and gouge cuts done.

And the plane is done. Finished with two coats of boiled linseed oil and then waxed with a beeswax-linseed oil mixture.

Wonderful build, Oskar! So much to like, but I’ll mention just a few....

the faceted handle right off the knife is really good! Because the facets are small, the effect is refined, like a hammered finish on silver (my wife used to collect it).

Did you finish the bed, and keep it true and level, with just a hand held chisel? No float or file? Those first fat shavings are impressive.

Granddad would be proud to see what came of his Berg double iron! Was he a woodworker or craftsman?

Looks very nice, Oskar. I know that when I got my beech trying plane in 1979, it really made a great difference in how easily I could prepare stock.

Are you the Oskar who asked for advise about setting up shop in a 5 ft X 11 ft room some years ago? I remember I set up trestles and a plank in my own shop for a few days to see what it was like to work in that space.

Very nice work!

I like the tote in particular (I like it all but the tote is uniquely yet subtly done).

I end up with scraps of beech from a couple kinds of grips I make, it's really handy stuff to have for tool making I find. Makes great handles and seems to slick up really good with some wax.

my granddad did some woodworking and had a collection of all kinds of tools. But he was really more of a tinkerer, trying out many things and repairing stuff. He always said he regretted not becoming a blacksmith instead of an engineer.

I don´t use floats or files. Just paring, chopping and an abutment saw. Probably the slow way to make things but I enjoy the chisel work so much I don´t long for floats. making the narrow mortice in a side escapement plane I would probably get a suitable float.

I´m really looking forward to putting it to use. The last years I´ve used my previous 20'' try plane, which is working great for edges, but the iron is only about 1 3/4 wide and I think this plane will be a step up for panels.

Yes, same Oskar. I was very grateful back then that you actually did that experiment. Still in the same cellar and happy with the bench and the room in front of it.

beech is really nice for handles. The cut surfaces feels great when they are waxed.

Live in Germany, and here there is massive amounts of cheap furniture covered in beech veneer. Makes me sick just looking at it, and then, everytime I make something in massive beech I think it looks nice, and feels great. Good wood in the right dosis.
