New David Weaver title...

Bill White

Just noticed that Popular Woodworking featured David's sharpening method (Unicorning), and in the credits he has been titled a TOOL MARKER.

David shall be forever more given that elevated position within our ranks.

Congrats David, and BTW, the chisels are great.

Thanks, Bill!

David Weaver

I had to choose how to describe myself, and thought if I said I was a woodworker, it would sound funny as on balance, that's only been about half of my time and when I do it, it's out of need for the results and not out of interest in doing it well.

I may not be a great toolmaker (i've made and sent at least one dud so far), but amateur toolmaker is probably more accurate than amateur woodworker. Deep inside, insecurity makes me really want to say as a title "a tinkering nobody with no real credibility".

But the method works great and I'm glad it made it into a print publication.

I just thought that it was a hoot to see the MARKER instead of Maker.

I totally missed that this morning...

David Weaver

...sorry...short on sleep!

I have marked a few tools. A couple with the stamp, a couple with unintended scratches/scuffs while making, and none by lifting a leg like a dog on a fire hydrant.

I have to admit....

David Weaver

.....after misreading this at first (and having no copy of the magazine article in hand other than a digital copy), I'm tempted to change my youtube channel to "The Tool Marker" and maybe get a tshirt made with a corny logo.

If I had the ability...

...to make metal stamps, I'd make one with a unicycle and a corn cob and mark the tools with it.

that is...

David Weaver

...fantastic. I'd love to have a metal stamp that would put that in hot steel on a chisel.

If that shirt was in stock, even if it was some bonkers price like $30, I'd have to have. I'll look around. I'm out of date with tech on demand stuff, but I'm sure there's a tshirt place or 100 that can take a picture and put it on a shirt - one way or another, I'm getting one!

that's a good idea...

David Weaver

..there's a nice video from the 1990s or so about stamp making in sheffield - I didn't know anyone was left doing it to that level.
